SEO (search engine optimization) or search engine optimization is a very important part of creating a website.

SEO is the process of designing your website so that your site is ranked higher in search engines such as Google. More specifically, to make your site appear as the best result on the search engine results page for a given user-entered query.

SEO is an essential tool for small and large companies who compete to make their websites appear to the widest possible audience.

To improve the SEO of your website, you can make a number of simple changes in the design and content of the website, which will make your website more attractive to search engines.

If you would like to go for a good burger in Prague, it is likely that you will write "the best burger in Prague" in Google. The results that come to you may not necessarily be the best restaurants with a burgram in Prague, but the companies or organizations that have used their SEO tool best.

SEO is a way to increase traffic to your website. You need to use targeted keywords and phrases in the right places on your site, which your potential customers will enter into the search engine. The better your SEO, the higher your search engine rankings.

How does SEO affect search engine rankings?

Search engines, like the aforementioned Google, or the Czech List, are aggregators of all websites. This means that when you search for something with these search engines, they will show you up to thousands of results related to what you have entered.

Search engines collect these results using robots whose task is to constantly crawl the Internet. Robots crawl individual pages on the Internet and make an "image" of them in terms of content. Depending on how the site is from an SEO perspective

ready, search engines assign, in simple terms, rankings (index), group them according to key terms and then display the top-ranked sites in the first places of the search result ( SERP ). Thus, search engine optimization is about optimizing the content of a website so that it is as readable as possible for robots that have an elementary effect on search engine rankings. With regular indexing, Google's query results are very fast. Google already has its own lists of top results for whatever you want to search for, so you don't have to crawl all the webpages at once.

What (positive) factors are important for Google to evaluate what it will display in higher search results?

Many factors affect a site's ranking in search results. Google currently lists over 200. Google always prioritizes sites that meet certain criteria. Some of these criteria include:

  • The site contains the keywords you searched for in the search engine. So if you searched for "the best burger in Prague", you will see websites that use these words more often on their website. Nowadays, however, it is no longer enough to write on the website "We sell the best burger in Prague".

  • Websites are popular. Sites that people visit and stay on for a long time, and even share links from those sites, for example, climb up quickly.

  • The site contains images . Google prefers sites that are both visually appealing and descriptive. It often places them above text-only sites. Today, more than ever, Google prefers a good user experience with a given website.

  • The website pays or sometimes pays for its preferred place. Some websites pay Google to rank higher. These results are referred to as " Ads ." The effect of higher traffic then increases the ranking of the site, and thus the organic placement.

How can I improve my SEO on a website?

First we need to tell if we want to be seen in a search that is paid or organic.

Paid search is when a site owner pays a search engine for the first place on a page when someone searches for its specific terms. The search term will then appear on Google with the words "Advertising" or "Sponsored." These links come from website owners who pay Google for advertising space (through Google Ads) to drive traffic to their site. Most often, they set a daily budget for certain terms that are relevant to their site.

This means that most SEO work on your website focuses on organic search. Organic search is meant when you don't pay Google for anything. Your SEO setup is just so good that you get the first places yourself. If you want your website to rank higher on Google than you do now, but you don't want to pay for advertising, you should do an SEO input analysis to find out where your basic SEO shortcomings are on the web.

Identify the keywords for your site

This section may require extensive site analysis. You need to find the terms, words, and phrases that describe your site and what users search for on Google to get to your site.

Google Trends and Google Ads are great tools to help you see what users are looking for online. If you already have a Google Search Console implemented, then it is a great resource right on your site. You can compare different words and find out which one is searched for more. When choosing terms, think about what is key to your site and also what sets you apart from the competition.

The keyword analysis itself then requires various techniques and regular review.

Ask basic questions about your site

Is your site free of grammatical and spelling errors? Don't have broken or expired links on your site? Are your site and subpage titles concise and concise? Are there duplicate pages? Does your site have a meta description that summarizes your site content and keywords well? Are website URLs short, easy to remember, and full of keywords? Don't your URLs contain clusters of letters and numbers? Is your site loading fast enough? Do you use quality media and images? Are your site's keywords well placed in the headlines? Do you have enough text and unique content? Are there quality links to your site on other sites? Do you have good source code (W3C criteria)?

These are all issues that need to be addressed before your site's rankings can reach the top organically. Keep in mind that if your site is relevant, graphically appealing, and easy to navigate, you can always expect better search engine results.

Trends for 2021 in a nutshell

Core Web Vitals

Google has introduced new metrics to track and evaluate site usability and quality. So there is also a clear link to SEO. These metrics will affect the ranking of your site by Google. From May this year, these three specific web metrics will be measured - LCP, FID and CLS.

  • Largest Contentful Paint - How long it takes for the main content of your website to load.

  • First Input Delay - A metric that describes how quickly a user can start performing tasks on a page.

  • Cumulative Layout Shift - evaluates how visually stable websites are in the process of loading. Open the page, you see where you want to click, and at the moment of clicking, a new element is built, such as a banner, which shifts the page layout and which you can click involuntarily.

Voice search

We can expect that, as in the US, there will be more households that use voice search, for example through Siri, Alex or Google Voice Assistant. The diversity of a query through a traditional web search engine may differ not only in addressing the medium, but also in the more specificity of the query, for example, using more verbs, which are more natural for voice search. Keywords could replace more complex questions and natural phrases in site content for voice search.

Mobile devices come first

Google primarily looks at the mobile version of the web instead of the desktop version. With the ever-increasing trend of mobile devices, Google will begin ignoring the content of websites that are only visible on the desktop on March.

There are many things that affect SEO websites. This is also why SEO has become an important element for companies on websites that need to be addressed both at the beginning and during the construction of the site, because the criteria and requirements of robots that evaluate the attractiveness of the site and the related position in search engines. is changing according to current trends. The better your SEO on your site, the better rankings it will give you, and the higher the position in the search results.

It should also be emphasized that if you optimize yourself or with an agency, search engine positioning will not grow overnight. SEO is running for a long time, the results will affect each other differently, it depends on many factors (competition, popularity of the topic,…). Sometimes a few months, sometimes half a year, sometimes a year or more.
